Garlock compression packing is rigorously tested to ensure effective sealing in valves, pumps, agitators, and other rotary equipment. The development of the compression packing line reflects the evolution and innovation in the materials used in its production. Garlock develops and manufactures it’s own technical yarn braided into packing, along with high performance proprietary coatings, that are essential in this age of sealing performance requirements.

Carbon Packing

Garlock Premium Carbon Packing offer field proven performance, versatility and longevity. The distinctive design using high purity staple carbon fiber results in carbon packing that can conform to shape better compared to continuous carbon filament packing. Carbon fiber packings are not all created equal. Higher carbon purity improves the temperature and chemical resistance of the braid. Lattice braid construction from staple fibers produces a carbon packing that conforms to the stuffing box better, requiring lower gland load to seal. That lower gland load translates into a packing that will last significantly longer than those made from continuous or stretch broken filaments. It also means that there will be less frictional drag on the shaft in rotating equipment and easier operation in valves. Garlock’s styles 98 and 5000 are designed to give the user the greatest return on initial investment in terms of leakage control, service life, and dependable, cost-effective product.

Style 1333-G Graphite Packing

Style 5888 Valve Stem Packing

This dimensionally stable, firm, high-density PTFE continuous filament fiber packing is useful in slower shaft speed applications.  Its PTFE dispersion reduces friction and prevents leakage through the braid. Style 5888 is resistant to all chemicals except molten uranium salts. It is completely asbestos-free, with very little water absorption.

The Garlock CROWN BUSH® pump sealing system is a hydrodynamic flush control device that reduces gland water consumption by 50-80%. A typical process pump flushed at 30 liters per minute uses 16 million liters of water per year. The Garlock CROWN BUSH® pump sealing system would save up to 11.8 million liters of water per year on one such pump alone.

FLUSH-GARD® Seal

Garlock style 1398 is a nuclear grade braided flexible graphite valve stem packing.

The graphite-containing INCONEL® filament reinforces the packing to handle BWR (General Electric) and PWR (Westinghouse, Combustion Engineering, and Babcock Wilcox) valve service conditions as an end-ring material for use with other graphite products. Style 1398 can also be used as a bushing material in the bottom of the stuffing box to fill any excess depth not needed for sealing components.

  • QUICKSET® version configured to offer consistent sealing performance over a wide temperature range in shallow stuffing boxes
  • Field proven Garlock “Cup and Cone” design allowing radial expansion and conformability to accommodate valves that may not be in ideal condition.
  • Excellent oxidation resistance in high temperature steam applications
  • Well suited to seal new and older control valves. Desired operational performance can often be achieved without the expenses of bringing the valves back to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Provides a high level of sealing with less stem friction compared to braided ring or taller sets. Plant resources to control actuated valves can therefore be used more efficiently and economically

  • Patented “cup and cone” design permits selective component compression and controlled radial flow for effective sealing of I.D. and O.D.
  • End rings act as wiper rings to restrict graphite particle transfer, prevent extrusion and provide extra resiliency
  • Patented cup and cone design can provide sealability in valves as shallow as three-ring cross sections
  • For deep stuffing boxes requiring more than a 7-ring set, machined / split carbon bushings can shorten the box depth
